Getting older often means needing assistance to do the things you used to do yourself every day. Activities such as going to the doctor, making meals, and cleaning the house. Luckily, there are community associations that have stepped up to create programs to help seniors take care of these everyday chores. Here are a couple of examples of community associations available to seniors.
Community & Home Assistance to Seniors (CHATS)
Servicing the York Region and South Simcoe area of Ontario, CHATS provides several services to seniors in the area, such as:
- Transportation services; transportation from the hospital to home, to medical appointments, grocery shopping, personal errands, and social outings; just about anywhere a senior might need or wish to go to.
- Home safety services; assistance with home maintenance issues, a hoarding and de-cluttering program, and more.
- Community programs; three programs designed to provide seniors with a variety of social activities in a safe, friendly, caring environment.
4 Korners Family Resource Centre: Deux-Montagnes, QC
4 Korners Family Resource Centre is a non-profit community organization servicing people in the Laurentian region of Quebec. 4 Korners has programs for everyone; youth, adults, seniors and their families. One of the programs they offer deals with elder abuse.
- Theatre La Belle Gang; this is a community partner that offers French and English plays that aim at combating abuse towards seniors. The actors are a group of seniors themselves who, aside from loving to perform, decided to start a project called “Abuse Exposed.” The goal of this project is to break the silence regarding elder abuse, show other seniors ways they may be being victimized, and bring to the attention of the younger audience situations of elder abuse they may have witnessed (or worse, participated in), and encourage them to treat seniors with more respect.
These are just a couple of examples of the great community associations available to help seniors.
